Aspect Ratio & Safe-Area Planner
Compute title-safe and action-safe rectangles, plus letterbox/pillarbox bars and the largest crop for a target aspect ratio.
About this tool
Lay out broadcast-safe graphics and plan multi-platform crops. Enter your frame width and height (and optionally a target aspect ratio like 9:16) to get title-safe (80% and 90%) and action-safe (90% and 93%) rectangles with pixel dimensions, insets and origins, plus letterbox/pillarbox bar sizes and the largest centered crop for the target ratio. Ideal for editors repurposing 16:9 footage for vertical Stories, Reels or TikTok.
Frequently asked questions
What are title-safe and action-safe areas?
Action-safe (typically 90–93% of the frame) is where important action stays visible on overscan displays; title-safe (80–90%) keeps text and graphics clear of edge cropping.
How do I plan a 9:16 crop from a 16:9 video?
Enter your width and height and set target_ratio=9:16. The tool returns the largest centered crop matching that ratio along with the x/y offset to use.
What is the difference between letterbox and pillarbox?
Letterboxing adds black bars on the top and bottom when content is wider than the frame; pillarboxing adds bars on the left and right when content is narrower. The planner reports the exact bar size.
