Depth of Field & Hyperfocal Calculator
Calculate hyperfocal distance, near/far focus limits and total depth of field.
About this tool
A depth-of-field and hyperfocal distance calculator for photographers. Enter your focal length, f-number, focus distance and sensor format as key=value lines, and it returns the hyperfocal distance plus the near limit, far limit and total depth of field. Use it to nail focus for landscapes, portraits and macro work.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate depth of field?
Enter focal length, aperture, subject distance and your sensor format. The tool computes the hyperfocal distance, then the near and far acceptable-focus limits and the total depth of field in metres.
What is the hyperfocal distance?
It is the focus distance at which depth of field stretches from half that distance all the way to infinity. Focusing there maximises the sharp zone, which is ideal for landscapes.
Why does my far limit show infinity?
When the subject distance reaches or exceeds the hyperfocal distance, the far limit becomes infinite, so everything from the near limit onward is acceptably sharp.
What circle of confusion does it use?
It picks a standard value per sensor (full-frame 0.029 mm, APS-C 0.019 mm, Canon APS-C 0.018 mm, Micro Four Thirds 0.015 mm, 1-inch 0.011 mm). You can override it with coc=0.03.
